ATA pilots honoured at last.

Air Transport Auxiliary's intrepid pilots received a special Veterans Badge on September 9th. Before going to London for the presentation, 51 veterans and their relatives and friends gathered at White Waltham Airfield.

Maidenhead Heritage Centre was very proud to be invited to put on a display of uniforms, photographs and logbooks from our nationally important ATA Collection.

A dedicated ATA gallery is under development at our museum in Park Street, Maidenhead.

LOST BUILDINGS OF MAIDENHEAD

Which fine old much-loved buildings do you remember that have disappeared from the town over the last 50 years? These could include the old Maidenhead Library in St Ives Road, the Cookham Road Swimming Pool, the ABC Rialto Cinema, Cliveden Hospital and the old Guildhall in High Street.

This new exhibition invites visitors to recall a number of these and to illustrate the exhibition, researchers Marion Kaye and Richard Poad have tracked down many photographs, some quite rare, aalong with several paintings. The display cabinets are filled with historic artefacts and documents which reflect the histories of the Lost Buildings. These vary from programmes for events at the Guildhall and the Rialto to terracotta ridge tiles manufactured at Cooper's Brickworks at Pinkneys Green. The Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead has loaned a gavel from the Mayor's Parlour, made of oak from the lock-up cell in the old Guildhall.
