Most
towns have a group of satellite villages which are dependant on
a larger settlement for provision and administrative services. In
a majority of cases the villages are chronologically much older
than the towns which have an early medieval foundation, Maidenhead
is no exception and came into being in the thirteenth century as
a market town on the route to Bristol. In contrast its surrounding
villages or manors were formed during the Anglo-Saxon period and
were listed in the Domesday Survey of c.1086
In
this book the author analyses these villages firstly as manors and
then as extended settlements with evidence from the Domesday book,
ancient documents, archaeological sources, place-names and fieldwork.
Some of the later history of the settlements is illustrated by important
or unusual events that have occurred there.

Coming of the Railway
How did Brunel's railway affect
the coaching town of Maidenhead, and how did it influence the town's
development during the reign of Victoria? The answers will be found
in this exhibition which we are reviving for the first time for
many years. Our scale model of the Sounding Arch will have pride
of place.
